When do you consider a website a failure?

You are creating websites? Then you probably measure success by daily user visits. In case you are doing landing pages for a product, then you might also check the daily sold items. No matter what, traffic is important. But how much time do you give yourself to convert your website project into a successful project. When is the point that you say I have to close a site down because of not achieving your desired statistics?

First of all, you should have set your goals at the beginning of a website project very precisely. My initial fitnessmotto.com goal was not to build a successful website but to motivate myself doing fitness. I did partly manage to transform my idea of doing more fitness. Daily fitness routines have been established over the last couple months. So, there is actually a change but the change is not really huge, at least not yet. On the other hand, my motivational website has practically no traffic which isn’t very motivating. While building the fitness site, the motivation started already on a high level, later on the site engagement decreased since no one was actually participating.

The website facts after a couple months:

    • the fitness website did motivate me only partly
    • the website traffic is pretty low
    • low search engine keyword results

Here are the stats of the fitness site

Can I still turn this site into a mindblowing project?
In order to transform a project into a desired goal, I will have to analyse everything I have done so far. Did I do marketing for the site? A little! By a little I mean that I have done some link building and sporadic radio ads in California and Great Britain.

What is the fitness website slogan or focus?
It has been a social network pinning strategy where users can pin their favorite fitness motivation videos and pictures around the web on one site. The idea of it is temporary okay. Users could of course also choose to go to pinterest. So I think that I could only manage to turn this project around if my content is unique. Fitness itself is more fun when people join up in a group and focus on a goal. That’s why I would like to remain the social part of the site. But what I chould change is the purpose, the reason…

Here is my idea for the fitness motto idea:
Users create fitness motto tasks and other users fulfill the tasks filming performing their tasks. Only users who fullfilled a task can create new fitness motto tasks. Every fitness task should have a motto.

What do you think of this idea?

Note about an advice from Aaron Swartz
Aaron Swartz was a very successful web entrepreneur who commited suicide a couple days ago.

    Words of Advice

What’s the secret? How can I boil down things I do into pithy sentences that make myself sound as good as possible? Here goes:

    1. Be curious. Read widely. Try new things. I think a lot of what people call intelligence just boils down to curiosity.
    2. Say yes to everything. I have a lot of trouble saying no, to an pathological degree — whether to projects or to interviews or to friends. As a result, I attempt a lot and even if most of it fails, I’ve still done something.
    3. Assume nobody else has any idea what they’re doing either. A lot of people refuse to try something because they feel they don’t know enough about it or they assume other people must have already tried everything they could have thought of. Well, few people really have any idea how to do things right and even fewer are to try new things, so usually if you give your best shot at something you’ll do pretty well.

I followed these rules. And here I am today, with a dozen projects on my plate and my stress level through the roof once again.

The forum software market is declining

More and more forum owners are closing down their forum boards. The reason for this trend might be facebook or not, but admins do not tend to search for forum software this much anymore. If you look at the chart you see that the main forum software solutions like vbulletin, Invision Power Board and xenforo are not as popular as they used to be. Well xenforo is pretty new, but their software solution seems to be appealing to some admins. Phpbb is not listed on this chart, but you can check for yourself and you will see that the opensource forum community is also a little in trouble.

Most forum company solutions tend to say that facebook is not a problem and that you can actually use facebook to market your forum. But why are users leaving forum communities in favor of facebook? You have not noticed it, yet? Then you might want to check your forum numbers again.

What do you think, does this google chart represent your forum community trend?

Internet Brands is responsible for the little to no innovation in my opinion.
I hope XenForo will make up for all of this lost time.
IPBoard lost much attention after going premium.

Do you think that one company can be responsible that a whole market seems to be declining?

Xenforo seems to have a legal case problem which ensures uncertainty, at the moment. Even 3rd party developers are unsure about the future of xenforo. And IP.Board has some architectural software problems, e.g. you don’t get notified when someone is commenting on your blog or your gallery and SEO seems not as good as solutions from competitors.

Nevertheless, does it really has anything to do with users leaving forum boards?

Is a fitness wallsit good for your knees?

While taking this fitness photo, I realised that a wallsit hurt my knees a little. I am not sure if there is proven medical statement that it could damage a knee in certain cases, but I will be hesitant doing this exercise in the future. The are just enough other workouts which are just fine for getting the body muscles in shape.

What do you think, could a wallsit exercise damage your knee?

    Why I started a fitness site…

My (fun) fitness plan (which is not business related)

Everyone who starts a new website is usually aiming for a website success story. At this time I set a different goal for my site project. First, I explicitly defined that the success of the site in terms of heavy traffic should not be my goal. This will be more a fun project on the site which is dedicated to myself. Working on the computer all day long has had a bad influence on my body shape. Therefore I made up my mind, and committed to change that situation. The commitment to that change will be my new site project.

First I started off by changing the way I work by exchanging my working desk to a standing desk. This alone will not have the desired impact on my body. Therefore I had to continue with another step to get closer to my goal. Let’s define my goal.

MY GOAL: Get in shape, now

Some of the questions which come up when I think about this project is.
    1. How do I get there?
    2. Where will I get my motivation from?
    3. Will I stick to my plan?

Over the last decade and more I created and managed several sites. Therefore I know what it takes to work consistently on the success of a website. Doing sport activities is pretty similar to having a successful site. You have to be persistent on your goal. Failing on the way to your goal is a common procedure. Therefore, YOU need to stick to your goal, no matter what.

In order to solve the first problem, I am opening a fitness motto site for myself and to people who want to join that particular goal.

The slogan of my project is: What is your fitness motto?

Everyone has a different fitness motto and it might change from day to day. Therefore I am trying to write down snapshots of my own fitness mottos. This slogan will answer my second question. It should motivate myself and maybe others to see what fitness motto’s keep people doing sports.

What fitness activities am I doing at the moment?

    • Ball dancing 1 hour per week
    • Zumba dancing 1 hour per week
    • free weights lifting (no schedule)
    • running (no real schedule)
    • home fitness e.g. push ups, sit-ups, jumping jack

No one can predict the future, therefore I can not say if I stick to my fitness plan. But what I can say, is that I feel very motivated to transform my goal into reality.

Thank you for reading about my fitness goal.

Drupal 6 to WordPress 3.1 migration

Moving from Drupal CMS 6.x to WordPress 3.1.x

Since 2007 I have been checking for a Drupal alternative because of several reasons. One main reason for the switch was that Drupal was too expensive to maintain. If you want to maintain a cutting edge website design and if your site needs some basic social features, then your drupal site needs a somewhat continuous big investment.

In case that you are a serious developer and you have a lot of spare time for your site, then you might not have that issue. With the release of drupal 7, I knew that I would not benefit from upgrading on the long run. Drupal’s future and roadmap is way off on how I expect my content to be managed.

Nevertheless I am thanking Drupal for its existence and for managing my sites for the last 6 years. The time with drupal was not always easy but we mostly achieved what we were looking for.

The switch has been basically already shown by others. So I just followed this migration tutorial and everything was set pretty fast. You can see the new website here.

So my path for the last decade or more went from phpnuke, postnuke (now Zirkula), typo3, drupal and finally to wordpress. On the way I have also gained a lot of experience with forum software such as UBB, Simple Machines Forum, vBulletin and IP.Board. I was in charge of administering Linux Servers and websites. Working with different cms solutions meant also knowing how to transform basic design changes and also knowing your way around  with drupal modules like cck.

Ease of use is really a game changer and wordpress and xenforo (forum) are really great software packages which have shown that the user and the administrator cares about software which is easy to navigate.

As an administrator, I do not care if I work with open source software or with proprietary software solutions because open source software is not necessarily cheaper just because the software itself was for free. Maintaining and developing will also cost you money and that is why I have my favorite packages on both sides.
